A total of $41,463 was raised for diabetes education at the second annual Because of Brandon event in Crosby on July 29. The funds will be used to send area youth to diabetes camps, for patient travel expenses and adult educational events.
Sponsorships and cash donations totalled more than $14,000 while the silent auction raised about $11,000 and the raffles more than $15,000. Other events included the wine and beer tasting, mega meat raffle and street dance.
The main raffle winners were: 2017 Arctic Cat ATV – Carol Meyers, Crosby; Canadian fishing vacation package – Lisa Waby, Deerwood; Ruttger’s Resort stay – Tim Stier, Belle Plain; $150 Cash – Edward Miland, Crosby; and $50 – Dave Johnston, Brainerd. Winners of the firearms raffle were: Benelli 12 Gauge – Amanda Fort, Crosby; Remington 700 – Mike Diehl, Deerwood; .22 LR Barracuda – Steve Burkstrand, Deerwood; and $200 – Dave Johnston, Brainerd.
The event was in memory of Brandon Houge, formerly of Ironton, who died at age 27 from diabetes complications. Houge was an employee of the Acuren Company in Duluth and was the former manager of the Crosby Bar and Grill.
